Rock Stars

Rock Stars is the place we highlight brands that are making changes, or that have hit upon a truly innovative product that meets our heady “Things We Would Feed Our Children” criteria.

The rules: No artificial dyes (beet juice, etc. are OK) no high fructose corn syrup, no BHT, no THBQ- well, you get the idea.

So what CAN they have? An awesome taste that makes the rest of the filler missing totally beside the point.

And, just FYI: Rock Stars is a space on DIY-Food that’s ad free, can’t be bought or sold. You just have to be picked out of the crowd and pulled up on stage. But, consumers: If you have a great product you discovered, holla.

With no further ado:

Pillsbury Simple Cookies

I’ve long lamented the fact that the refrigerated cookie doughs had many other things in them besides sugar. Sugar, I can deal with, dyes and HFCS, not so much. At last, one of the big companies figured out that this is a market, and created “Simple” Cookie Dough. Instead of a tube, it comes in a flat package, and is price comparable to other doughs on the market.

Starbucks Rids Baked Goods of Dyes and High Fructose Corn Syrup

Starbucks eliminated dyes and high fructose corn syrup from their baked goods at the end of the summer, making my personal life much easier- my kids always wanted the one or two things that were guaranteed to spazz them out. While this did mean some things like the beloved toffee nut bar fell by the wayside, I think it’s worth the trade. Now, if only they can rid the Frappucinos of it!

In the meantime, if you need something cold, you can indulge in a Vivanno smoothie, which is artificial dye and HFCS Free.

Kudos to Pillsbury and Starbucks- October’s Rock Stars.
